Working with Fenton Communications in a battle for human rights worldwide, the Italian non-profit organization known as No Peace Without Justice (NPWJ) teamed up with the Inter-African Committee on Traditional Practices Affecting the Health of Women and Children (I-AC), Euronet-FGM and the Senegalese NGO La Palabre to launch a 2010 Campaign to promote and ensure the adoption, at the 65th United Nations General Assembly, of a resolution explicitly banning female genital mutilation. The organizations needed a poignant and direct communication piece to appeal to diplomats, advocates and allies alike around the world.
We developed a message template to allow each speaker to deliver their message from personal point of view. Given the gravitas behind the message, we found it important to emphasize a solemn tone in how we composed the shot. We leveraged a painted black wall that we lit in spotlight fashion, and asked each dignitary to deliver their message straight to camera. At the end of each of their appeals, we asked them to deliver the line "End FGM Now" in both their native language and English.
