No Peace Without Justice United Nations Appeal

No Peace Without Justice United Nations Appeal

The Project

Working with Fenton Communications in a battle for human rights worldwide, the Italian non-profit organization known as No Peace Without Justice (NPWJ) teamed up with the Inter-African Committee on Traditional Practices Affecting the Health of Women and Children (I-AC), Euronet-FGM and the Senegalese NGO La Palabre to launch a 2010 Campaign to promote and ensure the adoption, at the 65th United Nations General Assembly, of a resolution explicitly banning female genital mutilation. The organizations needed a poignant and direct communication piece to appeal to diplomats, advocates and allies alike around the world.

The Work

We developed a message template to allow each speaker to deliver their message from personal point of view. Given the gravitas behind the message, we found it important to emphasize a solemn tone in how we composed the shot. We leveraged a painted black wall that we lit in spotlight fashion, and asked each dignitary to deliver their message straight to camera. At the end of each of their appeals, we asked them to deliver the line "End FGM Now" in both their native language and English.

The Results

  • We delivered the video with and without English subtitles, and it became part of No Peace Without Justice's developing communication arsenal.
  • The video continues to be leveraged directly by dignitaries to appeal to high-level officials who can offer support and impact.
  • NPWJ and the Nonviolent Radical Party, Transnational and Transparty (NRPTT), in coalition with the I-AC, Euronet-FGM and La Palabre, have cooperated closely on several initiatives to foster support for the adoption of UNGA Resolution banning FGM as a human rights violation.
  • The campaign has gained the support of human rights activists, women’s organizations, parliamentarians and government representatives from throughout Africa and Europe.
